Especially in the Gulf, there is no shortage of boring remixes floating around the DJ booths. You know the type: basically same as the original but with an unimaginative thumping added to the sonic foundation so that it’s more dance-ready in the sweaty dark of the club. Yet the best remixes aren’t just about lazy add-ons; they’re a full reimagining of the material. Sometimes a subtle change goes a long way; sometimes it’s a complete transformation. The best ones make something new in the post-production.
Below are the twenty-five best that I came across this year.

So we’re well into December and this is the last weekend playlist of the year. Maybe that explains the predominance of mellower tracks on this one. After all, what’s a December without lots of contemplating on mortality and the absurdity of existence, am I right?
Also—next week I’ll be posting my best-of lists: albums, remixes, and tracks. Until then …

He’s out with the grad students again, out at some dive the students can afford and where he can look generous picking up the bill like he’s magnanimous or something, like he isn’t keeping tabs on everyone—some more than others, though. She wonders which one it will be this time. She remembers he had the workshop over for dinner a month or so back. There’s the dumb one, the one with the aw-shucks expressions and the long blonde hair who probably wrote about poor folk like she knew a damn thing about it. Or maybe it’s the one who went to the liberal arts college in new England and talked about theory and injustice and indignation when everyone else wanted to talk about sports or the series finale they all just saw. Or it could be another one. They were all stereotypes anyhow, barely people, the guys too, looking up to him because ten years ago he’d put out a book of stories and some critic had called him a keen observer of the human condition. She hears the baby stirring in the other room and she sighs. She has a meeting with the partners in the morning, but there’s a name she remembers, and with that name there’s a number. She remembers that too, that and the voice, long ago, saying “Anytime …”
Doha in late November—now with significantly less schwitz. The hard rain that lasted longer than any I’ve seen in my two and a half years here is evidence of two things: 1) global warming (get used to it) and 2) that fate has determined you ought to get your ass outside and breathe the fresh air and stroll the Corniche and smoke some shisha on a terrace and dance to lots of music while you feel the chilled air on your skin and you dream a dream of autumn and winter.

The tired water pushes at the boat with meek shoves and the boat groans, accepting the disturbance with indifference. He registers the gentle sway as he sits aftward, lighting his pipe. The noise from the pier makes it out to him; it’s a reminder of humanity and its multitude of annoyances. What do you need other than solitude and something to drink and something to smoke, when anything else is only going to break you? They break you in the end, he thinks. He shakes the match and tosses it into the sea and thinks he hears the match head hiss but he probably imagined it. Expectations distort everything.

So this is America, he thinks. The smell of the gas station lingers in the car as the small towns roll by and soon the memory of the dirty looks he got when he said “petrol” scatters with the dust in his wake. He’d wound up in Richmond because of a woman and now he was fleeing across the country’s expanse, farther away from his original home, because to understand the past couple years he thinks he needs to know what’s out in the hinterlands, what’s at the heart of this strange place he’s never quite gotten used to—its strange politics and stranger sense of right and wrong. Still, he thinks, there’s a beauty in the shabbiness of the towns and the brutality of the landscape, the endless flatness and the steep mountains and hill countries. That, he starts to realize, is the appeal, the violent, stark innocence of the sun going down over fields of corns and tall grass.

Sometimes he likes to drive the beltway, getting off nowhere in particular, just going around, not fast, just going. The sun at his back and then his companion and then in conflict. Sometimes the drivers cut him off and sometimes he passes them and sometimes he turns his head to see a girl on the phone in the car next to him or sees a man eat a hamburger with both hands while steering with his knees but mostly everyone just looks ahead, emotionless or tired, as he goes the white lines seem to shoot through him as he goes around like a great wheel.
